2. How Did the Ancient Chinese Keep Food Warm in Winter?

Facilities like electric rice cookers, microwaves, and electric kettles, make it easy for people to keep food warm and enjoy a comfortable winter. So how did Chinese people in ancient times keep food warm in winter without these? In fact, ancient Chinese people used their own methods of heat preservation as early as the Shang and Zhou Dynasties.

“Wen Ding”, ancient rice cooker

One of the major functions of an electric rice cooker is to keep food warm. The “Wen Ding”, an ancient cooking container, served the same purpose, but instead of using electric energy, the ancient cooking container preserved heat by burning fuels like charcoal.

The “Wen Ding” unearthed in Nanjing in 1989 is thought to be the oldest of its kind discovered in China, dating back to the Stone Age. The craftsmanship of making the “Wen Ding” was developed in the Bronze Age. The bronze Ding from the Shang and Zhou Dynasties took on different shapes and structures.

“Ran Lu”, ancient small hot pot

The “Ran Lu” is a small size cooking vessel (器皿) made of bronze, which can be divided into three parts. A charcoal stove forms the main structure, with a bottom tray to hold charcoal ashes, and a movable cup at the top. Some experts have concluded that the vessel’s structure suggests it may have been used as a small hot pot and that these vessels became popular in the Warring States Period (475―221 B.C.).

Bronze You, ancient kettle

The Bronze You was one of the most common wine containers during the Shang and Zhou Dynasties. The Bronze You can also be used to warm wine. For example, the Bronze You with beast mask design, unearthed in Jiangxi Province, has an opening where charcoal could be placed. Just as people today can’t do without an electric kettle, the Bronze You allowed people to enjoy a hot drink.

Bronze Yan, ancient steamer

Although the “Wen Ding” was effective at keeping food warm, the ancient Chinese people later found that its burning process produced pollution. As a result, the Bronze Yan made with a two-tier structure and used to steam rice and other grains. After the Eastern Han Dynasty (25A.D.-220A.D.), further improvements to the Bronze Yan led to the modern-day steamer.

1. When did the “Ran Lu” become popular?

A. In the Zhou Dynasty. B. In the Eastern Han Dynasty.

C. In the Warring States Period. D. In the Stone Age.

2. The Bronze You, unearthed in Jiangxi Province, has an opening to .

7. She Walked Through Fire

On Thanksgiving weekend, the Heffelmire family gathered for a meal at their home. After dinner, the family went down to the finished basement to relax except Charlotte’s father, Eric, who was in the garage to fix his truck.

Around 8 p.m., Charlotte decided to check on her dad. She walked through the kitchen. When she opened the side door to the garage, black smoke rose up into the kitchen. She could barely make out her father lying on his back, trapped under the truck. He’d removed the front passenger-side tyre and raised the truck on a jack(千斤顶). The truck had slipped off the jack, and now the whole weight of the wheel was on his chest and shoulders.

Charlotte ran to the front of the truck and struggled to lift it. Eric was still conscious, and he yelled, “You got it! One more try!” She tried again and was able to tip the truck backward just enough for her to pull her dad by the shirt with both hands from under the truck.

She dragged him across the garage and 20 feet down the driveway. Then she ran back to the garage, which had burst into flames. “I was afraid the car was going to explode,” says Charlotte, so she climbed into the truck, which faced forward, turned the key, and pressed the gas pedal(油门). The car slowly rolled out, the metal wheel scratching loudly against the concrete.

Safely on the driveway, Charlotte stopped the truck and ran back to the basement. “There’s a fire! Everybody get out!” she yelled as she picked up her three-month-old niece and ran out. Outside, she handed the baby to her mom, and then ran around to the burning garage. She picked up a garden hose(水管)and sprayed the fire while calling 911.

A few minutes later, firefighters and an ambulance arrived. Charlotte was treated for second-degree burns on both her feet and face. Her dad had injuries on his chest and shoulders, as well as minor burns on his face. The garage and the house were damaged but the family survived.

The Heffelmires are staying in an apartment while their house is rebuilt. “Charlotte is a remarkable kid,” says her dad. Charlotte, however, simply says, “ I was saving my family and my house. I wasn’t going to let my dad die.”

【答案】8. A 9. C 10. A 11. B

8. It’s good to make mistakes, and here is why.

First of all, mistakes are a clear sign that we are trying new things. It’s always good to try new things because when we are trying new things,we are growing. If we never try anything new,how can we improve? The simple answer is,“We can’t”.

Another good thing about mistakes is that when we are making them,we are learning.Consider this―Edison failed 10,000 times before he perfected the light bulb. When asked how it felt to fail that many times,he said that he had learned 10,000 things that didn’t work.

When we make a mistake,we are much closer to success.Because every time we make a mistake,we eliminate one of the things that keeps us from success.

But all this doesn’t mean that we should go through life without considering the consequences of a mistake. Instead, when we try something new,we have to be willing to set some reasonable limits so that in the event that it doesn’t work out the way we want it to,we will be in a position to try again. We all have limited resources―in the form of time and money―so we shouldn’t blow them all on one approach to a problem. It’s best that we realize it probably won’t be perfect the first time and allocate these resources appropriately so we can learn, make corrections, and try again.Only by accepting and using our mistakes in this way can we make significant advances in our lives.

There is an old saying that goes,“If you’re not making mistakes, you’re not trying hard enough.”So go forth and make mistakes.

8. Which can be used to replace the underlined word "eliminate" in Paragraph 4?

A. make up for B. get rid of

C. accept D. expect

A. We should ignore the possible consequences.

B. We should accept the outcome willingly.

C. We should make some limits for our next try.

D. We should avoid making the same mistakes.

10. What is the text mainly about?

A. Dealing with mistakes. B. Making mistakes.

C. Making progress. D. Benefiting from mistakes.

11. What may the writer suggest we say to ourselves when making a mistake?

A. Never mind,I tried my beat. B. Great!Now I have learned something.

C. This is a waste of time. D. Look at this mess.I should just give up.

9.Christmas was near a season that we took seriously in our house. But a week or so before the 25th,my father would give each of his children $20.This was the 1970s,and $20 was quite a bit of money.

But I saw it differently. My father trusted me to have the smart to spend money wisely.Even better,he gave me the means to get it.On a very basic level,my father was giving me a shopping spree(狂欢)every year. But he was also giving me charge over my own fun, trusting my ability to manage money and making me feel like a grown-up.He didn't buy me Sherlock Holmes, but he gave me the means to walk into the bookstore and choose it for myself,so it felt like a gift from him.

My mother had a gift for giving me what I needed, usually right at the moment I needed it most. This was when I was 25,I failed at being an adult on my very first try.I had quitted my previous job but had no new one.But when my mother paid me a visit,I put on a good show, telling her I had started my own company.

My mother knew that I was trying hard and failing at that time.It wasn’t until afte

r she left that I noticed at the foot of my bed an envelop thick with cash. She knew how desperately I needed it.She knew that had she just shown up with groceries,or offered to pay my rent, she would have made me feel much worse. The cold, hard cash meant she was helping me.And,funnily enough, the distance with which she gave the gift felt like she was giving me space to fix my life and preserve my dignity. My mother and father both did the same thing. One was giving me the means to take my own decisions, and the other was giving me a second chance when those decisions had cost me dearly.

10.We took a rare family road trip to the Adirondacks in late August, and it was as refreshing and exhausting as family vacations tend to be.Toward the end of our long drive home, even the kids were leaning forward in their seats urging my lead foot on.At that point in a road trip, even sixty-five miles per hour feels slow. We have become numb to our speed and numb to the road signs flashing by.

My family lives on the edge of Lancaster County. Only thirty miles from home,I hit the brakes, and we began to roll, slowly, behind a horse-drawn carriage. We began to open our eyes again. We saw familiar green hills and the farm with the best watermelons. I rolled down the windows, and we breathed again.Just-cut hay and a barn full of dairy cattle.

At five miles per hour, you remember what you forget at sixty-five.You are thinking about a place, even when you are moving from place to place.

I am a placemaker. A homemaker, too. I am a mother of a young kid at home, and also a writer and a gardener. But,for me,those roles are wrapped up with the one big thing I want to do with the rest of my life:I want to devote myself to prepare a place and enjoy it with others.

The place I make with my family is a red-brick farmhouse built in l880. It has quite a few nineteenth-century bedrooms and a few acres of land, and we love nothing more than to fill them with neighbors and friends. We grow vegetables and flowers, keep a baker’s dozen of egg―laying chickens, and, since we moved in three years ago,we have planted many, many trees.

Living with my life’s purpose does not allow for much travel. I need to be here, feeding the chickens and watering the tomatoes. Any extra in the budget, and we spend it on trees.

But I learned something at the end of our family road trip.Travel can help me in the task of caring for my own place. When I slow down and pay attention to the road between here and there, travel tells me the connections between my place and all the other places.

4. What does the author try to express in the first paragraph?

A. The tiredness of her past family life.

B. Her disappointment at the family road trip.

C. The family’s eagerness to return home.

D. Kids’excitement at driving fast on the road.

5. Why did the author slow her car some miles from her home?

A. Because she made a way for a horse-drawn carriage.

B. Because she enjoyed the scenery along the road.

C. Because she needed a break after the long drive.

D. Because she wanted to get rid of a fast-paced life.

6. The underlined word“placemaker”in the 4th paragraph refers to someone who_______ .

A. devotes most of his energy and time to building his house

B. is ready to help anyone in need in the community
