你有我的10欧元优惠码,WIN7,你还在等什么?

Right, let's get started with the confusing words.

好的,我们开始讲这些令人困惑的单词吧。

And to make this even easier for you, I have created a PDF worksheet.

为了让你更轻松,我创建了一个pdf讲义。

We've got all of the words, their pronunciation, all of the information from the video, plus some additional activities as well.

上面有所有单词,它们的发音,视频中的所有信息以及一些额外的活动。

Do bear in mind, this is a two-part video.

请记住这是一个分为两部分的视频。

You can also find the second part in the description box.

你还可以在描述栏里找到第二部分。

But the order doesn't matter.

但顺序无关紧要。

So the first one we have, especially and specially.

所以第一个,especially 和 specially。

Especially means more with one person or thing than with others, or more in particular circumstances than others.

尤其更多指的是一个人或事物而不是其他人,或者是某种特定的情况而不是其它的。

In my opinion, it's quite a hard word to define.

在我看来,很难定义它。

It's easier if you see it used in a sentence.

在句子里会更好理解。

For example, I love Seville, especially in the spring.

例如,我喜欢塞维利亚,尤其是在春天。

So I love Seville in general, but I love it even more in the spring.

所以我总体上喜欢塞维利亚,但是我更喜欢春天的塞维利亚。

Or, baby animals are cute, especially puppies.

或者,动物幼崽很可爱,尤其是小狗。

So I think all baby animals are cute, but I really think that puppies are so cute, maybe that little bit more cute, that little bit cuter.

所以我认为所有的动物幼崽都很可爱,但我真的认为小狗非常可爱,也许更可爱一点点。

Now, specially means for a particular purpose or a particular person.

特地指的是为了某个特定目的或特定的人。

An example, I made this cake specially for you.

例如,我特定为你做了这个蛋糕。

Now, here's the complicated bit.

下面是复杂的地方。

In British English, we tend to use the two interchangeably.

在英式英语中,我们问问会把这两个词互换。

It can be really hard to hear the difference when people speak.

人们说话时真的很难听到区别。

Specially tends to be less formal.

特定往往不太正式。

And I think that part of the reason for this is because it sounds like you are lazily dropping a syllable.

我认为部分原因是因为它听起来好像你吞掉了一个音节。

I made this cake specially for you.

我特定为你做了这个蛋糕。

It almost sounds like someone's trying to say, especially for you, but they're dropping a syllable.

这听起来就像有个人想说尤其是为你,但是吞掉了一个音节。

And actually, I would be inclined to say, I made this especially for you.

事实上我是想说我特别为你做了这件事。

And that is something that you will hear a lot in British English.

你会经常在英式英语中听到这个。

I made this cake especially for you.

我特地为你做了这个蛋糕。

I made this cake specially for you.

我特地为你做了这个蛋糕。

So in general, in American English, they differentiate between these words more.

所以一般来说,在美式英语中这两个词的差别更大。

And in British English, we just use especially in formal situations and specially in less formal situations.

而在英式英语中,我们会在正式场合使用especially,而在不太正式的情况下使用specially。

But really, it does depend on the person and what they have grown up hearing.

但说真的,这取决于这个人以及他们从小听到的说法。

Number two, we have loose and lose.

第二个,我们有loose 和 lose。

So there's a big pronunciation difference here.

这里的发音差异很大。

Well, I say big.

是的,我说很大。

It's very subtle, but it is quite important.

其实非常微妙,但这很重要。

Loose with the s at the end, and lose with z at the end.

Loose 以s结尾,而 lose 末尾是z。

But they are minimal pairs.

但它们是最小对。

They only differ in one sound, that final phoneme z, s.

它们之间只有一个不同的音,即最后的音素 z,s。

Loose is an adjective meaning not tight or not securely fixed.

松的是一个形容词,意思是不紧密或不牢固。

For example, I need to go to the dentist because my tooth is loosed.

我的牙齿松了,我需要去看牙医。

It's not securely fixed into my mouth.

它没有牢固地固定在我的嘴里。

Or I lost weight and now my clothes are loose.

或者我减肥了,现在我的衣服很松垮。

They're not tight.

它们现在不紧。

They are loose.

它们很松垮。

Now, to lose is a verb, meaning to not be able to find something, or to fail to keep something as well.

而失去是一个动词,意思是找不到东西或无法保留某些东西。

Examples, go to the dentist before you lose your loose tooth.

例如,在你失去你松动的牙齿之前去看牙医。

Before you lose (verb) , your loose (adjective) , tooth.

在你失去(动词)你松动的(形容词)牙齿之前去看牙医。

Or she wants to lose weight to make her clothes loose.

或者她想减肥让衣服松垮一点。

She wants to lose (verb) weight to make her clothes loose (adjective) .

她想减肥(动词)让衣服松垮(形容词)一点。

It is very, very common to see people misspelling these words and using the wrong one, so don't beat yourself up about it.

人们常常会拼错这些单词,并使用的是错误的单词,所以不要为难自己。

I know I say this a lot, but seriously, it's just not the end of the world.

我知道我经常这么说,但说真的,这不是世界末日。

We will understand what you're trying to say.

我们会明白你的意思。

Number three, we have accept and except.

第三个,我们有 accept 和 except。

OK, so with a, accept, we use the schwa, accept.

所以a开头的接受,我们用的中元音。

And with e, except, we use an e sound, except.

而e开头的除了,我们说的是e,除了。

Now in general, in British English and modern received pronunciation, you will hear people just using the schwa for both, except, except, except, except.

一般来说,在英式英语和标准发音中,你会听到人们用中元音发两个词。

When you speak quickly, you often find yourself using the most convenient or efficient way of pronouncing something.

当你说话很快时,你会发现自己用的是最方便或有效的方式。

So the schwa gets used a lot.

所以人们常常使用中元音。

Now, I'm going to use a and e for emphasis so that you know, which word I am referring to.

现在我要强调a和e,这样你可以知道我指的是哪个单词。

Accept is a verb, but except is usually a preposition or conjunction.

接受是一个动词,但除外通常是介词或连词。

It is sometimes a verb and I will touch on that later.

它有时是动词,我稍后会谈到。

But accept as in to accept is to agree or to receive something if offered.

但是接受,指的是同意或收到别人给的东西。

An example, I will not accept your apology, or I hope they accept the proposed changes.

举个例子,我不会接受你的道歉,或者我希望他们接受提出的改变。

Now let's look at except with the E, except.

现在,我们来看看e开头的除了。

It generally means apart from or excluding or with the exception of.

它通常是指排除或不包括或除外。

An example, I study every day except Sundays, or we look exactly the same, except my hair is darker.

一个例句,除星期日外,我每天都在学习。

A little memory tip, the EX, ex of except can be used to remind you that it is excluding, ex, excluding.

一个记忆技巧,ex指的是exclude中的ex。

Now to except as a verb with an E is very, very formal and it is rarely used.

Except用作动词是在很正式的情况下,而且很罕见。

It means to not include something or someone, you will usually see it in written English and I'll explain why.

它指的是不把某物或某人包括在内,你通常会以书面形式看到它,我来解释原因。

Look at this sentence.

请看这句话。

Tours are arranged all year round, January excepted.

全年都安排了游览,一月除外。

Okay. So it's quite confusing, if that sentence is said in spoken English.

好的。如果这句话用英语口语说出来,会很令人困惑。

January excepted, is January accepted as in they agree to it?

它是指一月被接受?

Or is it excepted as in it is not included?

还是指一月不包括在内?

When you see it written down, you can see it means that it is excluded.

当你看到它的书面形式,你就知道指的是不包括在内。

January is not included.

一月不包括在内。

You won't come across this verb very frequently.

你不会经常看到这个词用作动词。

It's just another example of English being a pain in the neck.

这只是英语令人痛苦的有一个例证罢了。

That's an idiom meaning really annoying for accepted and excepted to mean the opposite, but to sound the same.

这句习语的意思是真的很讨厌,被接受和除外明明意思是相反,但是听起来却是一样的。

Oh, it's just so annoying.

哦,太烦人了。

We have number four and this is a trio.

我们的第四个,这组有三个词。

We have assure, ensure and insure, okay.

我们有assure,ensure 和 insure。

So the last two have the same pronunciation ensure, insure.

后面两个发音相同,ensure,insure。

So let's look at the three to assure with an A, is to remove someone's doubts.

我们看一下a开头的保证。

I assure you that I will arrive on time.

我跟你保证我会按时到。

Don't worry, don't have any doubts I will arrive on time.

不要担心,不要对我会按时到达有所怀疑。

To ensure with EN is to guarantee or to make sure that something happens.

EN开头的保证是确保某事一定会发生。

I need to study to ensure that I pass my exam.

我需要学习以保证我能通过考试。

So assure and ensure are very similar, assure with an A, to remove someone's doubts and ensure with E N is to guarantee that something will happen.

所以 assure 和 ensure 很相似,assure指的是打消某人的疑虑,而 ensure 指的是保证某事会发生。

To insure with IN, is to cover someone or something like a house with an insurance policy.

IN 开头的保证指的是用保险政策保障某人或某物。

An example, the insurance company won't protect my house against flooding.

一个例句,保险公司不保房子遭遇洪水。

Now frustratingly, some policies, some insurance policies also have assurance policies as well, which just makes it so confusing, but let's not worry about that.

令人沮丧的是,一些政策,一些保险政策里面也有保证政策,这把问题变得更令人困惑了,但是我们不必担心。

We know the basic differences between the three.

我们知道三者之间的基本区别。

Finally, we have number five, which is inquire and enquire.

最后是第五组,inquire 和 enquire。

The same pronunciation again, they have very similar meanings.

又是相同的发音,它们的意思也很相似。

Well, actually they mean the same thing, but sometimes they're used in different situations.

恩,事实上它们的意思是一样,但是使用的场景不同。

So they both mean to ask someone for information.

所以它们两个都是指向某人询问信息。

Now in American English, once again, they have made this easier for you.

同样地,在美式英语中它们更简单一些。

They tend to favour inquire with IN, so enquire, you won't hear it as frequently in general.

在美式英语中人们更喜欢使用 inquire,所以你基本上不会经常听到 enquire。

I'm having to make a lot of generalisations here.

我必须在这里做很多概括。

However, the UK British English, we just liked to make everything that little more complicated.

但是英国的英式英语,我们总是会复杂一点。

Traditionally, to enquire as in EN to enquire simply meant to ask, but inquire, I'm just using, in and en for emphasis so you know which word I'm referring to.

传统来说,enquire 仅仅只是询问,而 inquire,我说 in 和 en 只是想让你们知道我说的是哪一个。

Inquire was used for formal investigations.

Inquire 被用于正式的调查中。

So I would enquire at a tourist information desk to see where the best ice cream shop was, but the police or a court would inquire about something.

所以我要问最好的冰淇淋店在哪里,这里用的是 enquire,但是警察或法院会询问一些问题,这里就要用 inquire。

However, nowadays both are used interchangeably.

但是现在人们会互换。

So people are just using words without knowing exactly what they mean, which is fine.

所以人们在不知道它们意思的情况下使用,这没关系。

I imagine eventually we will end up just favouring one.

我想我们最终会只喜欢用一个的。

I wonder if it will be inquire or enquire, time will tell probably.

我想知道是 inquire 还是 enquire,时间可能会告诉我们。

Right. That's it for today's lesson.

好的。今天的课就到这里。
